about

I've been a long-time fan of Dan Fogelberg and his fabulous story telling music. His campfire guitar sound and lush piano ballad work, so classically influenced and always melodious and beautiful, has been a companion for me through all of my school days and since. And when I was in college, I went to a concert of his where he played solo in Chapel Hill, North Carolina for this fantastic experience. And the encore was him playing his "There's A Place In The World For A Gambler" song. (Surely a long title indeed) Anyway, he asked the audience to repeat the chorus at the end and the place just slowly repeated that line, "Let it Shine" over and over and growing in intensity; it was the perfect ending to an unbelievable show and I was sitting on stage right about 35 feet away from him the whole time... WOW.

Something always hit me about that song and many times I felt it could be adapted into a worship setting. But the logic of it challenged me, especially when I thought about how gambling is often a road to great suffering generally frowned on by most organized Christian churches and yet Dan's lyrics addressed it with tolerance and an open heart which might be a stumbling block to a church's enjoyment of the beauty of the song. One day the urge got too powerful for me to resist and I tried to adapt the lyrics slightly, and with utmost respect to Mr. Fogelberg's original work, and this adaptation is the result.

I hope you enjoy it.

God Bless
